Here are the proposed daily routes for the third leg. They have been planned around the same three things: 1. Avoid heavy traffic (especially trucks!), 2. About 350 miles and 3. Stops at places where friends can join with me. I welcome local knowledge and suggested improvements.
DAY FOURTEEN – April 28, Skowhegan, MEto Lake Pleasant, NY – Heading west on US 2 all the way to Montpelier VT I will be making great strides toward home this first day of travel that is more west than south. This could be some of the prettiest country in the east. I’ll drive through or next to several wilderness areas and by lakes, forests and small villages for most of the day.
DAY FIFTEEN – April 29, Lake Pleasant to Erie, PA– This leg begins the string of big cities along the Great Lakes. On today’s menu: Rome, Syracuse and Buffalo NY and then along Lake Erie to the city of the same name. I don’t expect to enjoy today or tomorrow…Cleveland!! This day may be the toughest day as the entire route consists of built up area without a lot of natural beauty since it is so densely populated. I hope I am wrong but I don’t think so.
DAY SIXTEEN – April 30, Erie to Greenville, OH – This is the tricky day as I shoot the gap between Cleveland and Akron. I do pass pretty close to Mid Ohio Sports Car Course though so a stop for a visit may be in order as it has been 16 years since I raced here which I did on the same trip that I raced at VIR. It is another of my top five favorite tracks, so it certainly deserves a visit. After that visit I will drive west to Marysville where I pick up US 36 all the way to Noblesville.
DAY SEVENTEEN – May 1, Greenville to Hannibal, MO – Today I cheat. I will use Interstates 74 & 72 through Champaign, Decatur and Springfield, Illinois after clearing the Indianapolis sprawl by using Hwy 32 across the far north suburbs. Though this is cheating to some, I figure I am now 1. Heading back to the barn 2. It is a lightly traveled Interstate, and 3. I will be using US 36 almost all the way across Kansas and that is punishment enough to earn this treat!
DAY EIGHTEEN – May 2, Hannibal to Phillipsburg, KS – From Hannibal I head due west on US 36 across Kansas. The only respite from this long haul on a road as straight as a string is the stop I plan at the Geographic Center of the Continental US just north of Lebanon. This is one of the key marks I wanted to hit along with four compass points and the highest and lowest towns.
DAY NINETEEN – May 3, Phillipsburg, KS to Home – Back to the Barn!! This last day of the eastern swing will be BORING as I cross the western third of Kansas and the eastern third of Colorado which are nothing but barren plains. The good news is that I gain an hour halfway and that means the ETA is mid afternoon or earlier so I will have plenty of daylight left to unpack, clean up the car (and me) and still get to a beer by five o’clock. This will finish the long loop and I will take a day or two to prep for the western loop to come. More on that later.
